Well, Summer is over. That horrid, hot, humid season. I am much in love with Fall. The crisp breeze, the colors, the need for tea. This summer was not entirely uneventful; in fact it was full of crazy things. We moved...twice. My family almost lost my grandfather; but he is a very strong man!! My family also found out that there will be another baby soon; my brother & his wife are expecting in December ( I will have a nephew!). I did manage to get to the beach this year, for maybe the first time in years that did not involve me wearing funny clothes :)
The summer brings a very happy day though, DH and I celebrated our 2nd Anniversary. We went to the NC Zoo this year.

It was a quiet summer, event wise. Very little to do in the summer, plus with the chaos of moving there was no finding needed items. DH did make it to the 150th Gettysburg, I stayed home, stayed dry & stayed cool. The summer did have one exciting event, the Festival of Yesteryear held at the Museum of the Cape Fear. It was a day filled with Colonial & Regency activities. That evening there was a Regency Ball! What fun it was! I even made a new dress!

This past weekend brought us to the busiest weekend of the year. We hosted our 148th program here at Bentonville. And while I was mostly running around, working, I did get a change to run around and have little fun Sunday morning.
We managed to have our image struck by the wonderful Chris Morgan of thesilverbath.com. It is inspired by an original image I had found online. A new 1860's dress. This wool was part of the fabric.com sale a while back. I started on the dress in November, and well never finished it. We have been doing more early 19th Century living histories. With that comes a whole new wardrobe. I made my first cap! It was also my first piece to dive into the 18th Century with.

I have never made an apple pie, so this would be my first adventure, and for some reason I seem to have better results with recipes that are 150+ years old, I don't know why, so please don't ask (however, my DH has a theory on this).
So, the crust.
I chose a simple recipe for the crust and pie out of "The Practical Cook Book", 1850. It seemed simple enough, and since I can't really have a food processor at a Civil War event I needed a new crust recipe (my usual crust recipe came out of a Woman's Day magazine from last year). So I chose "No. 1 Common Paste". Converted to modern measurements it called for 2 sticks of butter ( I used unsalted at room temp to blend better), 4 cups of flour, 1 Teaspoon of salt, and about 1 cup of water. I mixed the dough with my hands to make sure I had a good consistency. I turned it out on my wooden board that I kneed my bread on. It was almost too much dough for the small board, so I halved it to form a top & bottom crust. With the bottom rolled out nicely, I placed it in my lightly floured pie plate. Crust, successful, so far....
I chose again out of the same book for the pie. "No. 3 Apple Pie" sounded good. The recipe did not specify what apples to use, I chose Gala, they have a sweet taste that I really enjoy. Peeled and sliced 3 large apples were enough to fill the crust. I heaped them into the crust. Since there were no measurements for the spices, I guessed. I chose the molasses from my cabinet that my grandpa brought me last year from the mountains (that is some good stuff!!!). I drizzled until the apples looked nicely covered. Then added the cinnamon, sprinkling it over the molasses. I did not have any allspice, so I dashed in a pinch of nutmeg, and the salt. It looked so good at this point that I decided to snap a picture! My DH was excited at this point too, despite the mess I was making in the kitchen. It smelled good too! I was giddy at this point, it really looked like pie!
I rolled out the rest of the dough for the top crust, and pinched it together on the sides, pulling off the excess dough as needed. Cutting a slit in the top as directed for steam to escape. Hmm, this may actually work!

The pie went in a "Moderate Oven" which means anywhere from 350-375. Mine was set at 350. Baked for 45 minutes, the crust did not really brown, except part of the edges. I wasn't sure when I took it out of the oven, it looked the same as when it was put in. We let it cool for a bit before being too excited to wait any longer. It smelled so good as I cut into it! We scooped out some! IT WAS PIE! I made a successful pie! The apples were so good! The crust was a little bland, but after it soaked in the syrup it was nice too!

For the future pie I think I will use a bit less flour. It was too much for the size of my pie plate. I may add a little sugar to the crust as well since it was a bit bland. But with less flour it may have more flavor too. I may let it cool longer too. The insides were a bit runny, which I noticed later after cooling became more like syrup. Other than that, it was good experience, and I plan on making it again soon!!

Stormi, Taylor & I

This past Saturday was full of memories and laughs! We attended the 1812 Marker Dedication in the Historic Cross Creek Cemetery, four veterans from Fayetteville that served in the War of 1812 were honored. You can read about the ceremony here: http://fayobserver.com/articles/2012/09/23/1205963
And see pictures here: http://photo.fayobserver.com/?ssid=215&sid=1
DH and I were joined with a great group of friends to enjoy the day with! After the dedication ceremony we headed over to the Fayetteville Area Transportation & Local History Museum to enjoy a picnic. The fare was great! Cold meat, bread, fruit, pickles, tea and lemonade and of coarse great conversation! There were so many memories made on the lawn that it would be impossible to list them all here. However, the skit we performed about the sewing of the flag for Ft. McHenry was perhaps the funniest!
I did leave my camera in the car, so there are not any pictures from the picnic sadly.
I did get to wear my remodeled pink & white gown! The fit had been horrible, so I ripped off the bodice and cut a new one, this time I made it a drop front (they are just so easy!). The "bib" is done on the bias creating a nice chevron effect. I also wore my new pink linen Spencer & purple bonnet. It was indeed a great day!AmandaCarolhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02379251713358943453noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6105448487210970282.post-82089504309783298582012-08-29T12:03:00.004-04:002012-09-05T11:36:02.096-04:00Meet Kathryn!

Kathryn is my latest project. She is an approx 18" cloth doll for use in the19th century! I cannot take credit for making her, because my DH did draft her, cut, sew & stuff her! I painted her face, hair and boots. She is primarily for my niece when she comes to events with us, although I must admit, I am having too much fun with her!

So far she has two dresses, one short sleeved dress that matches my nieces! A long sleeve purple dress for better occasions. She also has a pink pinafore, gray wool shawl, wool hood, two petticoats, and a chemise. She also has a nice quilt for cold nights. All of her items fit nicely in a basket trunk for travelling.
She has more items in progress, such as a sun bonnet, another pinafore, drawers and maybe even another dress.

I must confess, I have enough dress fabric left to make her a dress that matches one of mine! So she may very well get a "grown up" wardrobe in addition.AmandaCarolhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02379251713358943453noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6105448487210970282.post-63241684864933098412012-08-02T09:34:00.002-04:002012-09-05T11:35:22.593-04:00Little Sewing ListSo I have convinced my niece to let me make her a wardrobe for 19th Century fun! The event I am planning on her to attend is in October, so there is plenty of time, which is always nice!
So she is about to be 7, and will be by the event (so hard believe!!!). I love making little girl things, full of tucks and little frills, they make me smile! Its like making a dress on the half scale, and so much fun! The last dress I made her was over 3 years ago, it was a very pretty pink plaid with some blue trim, very simple and very pretty, she has now obviously outgrew it!

Pink Dress

I have let her be a part of the process. I pulled out fabric from the stash that I had bought years ago with the intention of making her more little things, but they never went any farther than a nice pile of fabric! Since she is a bit more grown up, I do not have enough fabric to make a dress out of some of the choices, but I gave her the option to choose her pinafore fabric. There were three options, one was a cut off from my favorite work dress (brown with pink flowers), one was leftover pink from her first dress, the other was a green/brown plaid. Can you guess what she chose? The pink plaid! I can't wait to get started on her projects!
So far the lists consists of

Pettichemise

Tucked petti

Drawers

Dress

Pinafores (maybe 2)

Sunbonnet- already started!

Luckily I do not have to buy any fabric for her garments, but I will have to get some white for the unders. I have already started her bonnet, using leftovers from one of my own sun bonnets (we'll match- HOW CUTE!) . I did cord the brim of hers rather than make it a slat, since little ones seem to have issues with slats sticking out in front of them.

One of these is baking. I have discovered that I love to bake! The mixing of ingredients is really therapeutic, the to put it in the oven and enjoy a treat afterwards does not help either!

She loves to get in the kitchen and play around. So we put on our aprons and began the process to make bread. The recipe I use is called "Amish White Bread"
2/3 cups of sugar dissolved in 2 cups of water
Add 2 yeast packets- let proof until foamy.
add 1/4 cup of oil and 1 1/2 tsp of salt
add 6 cups of flour one at a time.

This recipe makes 2 loaves at a time which does help when baking for a large crowd or to freeze for future use. After kneading the dough, it is set to rise for an hour. Punched down then divided into loaves and set to rise for 30 more minutes. Bake at 400 for 30 minutes and wahla! Fresh, incredible bread!
I like to eat fresh out of the oven with some butter or honey. We have it as a side dish, use it for sandwiches, or eat it with some peanut butter.
Recently I have had a craving for tomatoes! Luckily our neighbor has a patch of them growing near the fence and lets me take what I wish, usually about 2 or 3 at a time, since DH does not like them. So my new favorite way to devour this amazing bread is the some of the tomato. And as many in the South, I grew up on the tomato sandwich! So add a little mayonnaise, some salt & pepper, then some tomato! Its the best thing I have eaten in a while! I must confess I have ate about 5 tomatoes in the past few nights, but no worry!

So now you see why I call it "Bread Therapy" Such a good treat on a summer day!!
I stumbled upon "Our Own Snug Fireside: Images of the New England Home 1760-1860" By Jane Nylander at our awesome local used book store- Ed McKays!! I picked up for like $5 I think ( I really can not tell you how awesome this bookstore is, I never walk out empty handed!)
I was very impressed with the book. Nylander presents her information using first hand sources from diaries, journals, and publications. She does use a variety of men & women to shape a view of the common New England home. Nylander lets us look into the everyday lives of the people that lived between 1760 and 1860. The book looks at common cleaning practices, room set-up, food production & storage, changing seasons, holidays, and much more. In addition to wonderful in-text experts, the margins of the pages are illustrated with engravings and photographs that are captioned to give the reader a look into homes.

It was wonderful read, and I am sure that I will come back to it again & again both for reference and curiosity.
It was a hot day, but was pleasant with such great company!
The day started with the reading of the war declaration of the Capitol Building in downtown Raleigh. The militia was there along with a cannon.

After the reading of the war declaration we journeyed over to Mordecai House for the rest of the day. The men practiced drill. The ladies mostly stayed on the porch enjoying the shade, breeze and good conversation. Timely Tresses was there with their delightful assortment of hats, bonnets, ribbons & feathers! We all enjoyed the day. It was nice to get together with a group of friends and have fun, even if it was a bit warm.

That evening was the Bicentennial Ball hosted at the Raleigh City Museum. I spent much of the time before preparing hair for the dance! It was great fun, I even impressed myself with my curling iron skills! Turbans and feathers seemed to be all the rage with the ladies in 1812!

The dance started just a little late (parking was horrible!). All who attended the dance seemed to enjoy themselves. We dance all night, well I dance once, but others danced all night! It was great fun. There were tea sandwiches, cookies and lemonade available. It was quite a small, nice affair to be a part of. Such a nice experience, and it is a little different than the usual "dance" at reenactments.
What if Your healing comes through tears
And what if a thousand sleepless nights
Are what it takes to know You're near
What if my greatest disappointments
Or the achings of this life
Is the revealing of a greater thirst this world can't satisfy
And what if trials of this life
The rain, the storms, the hardest nights
Are Your mercies in disguise

This song has been stuck in my head for the past few days. The message that it conveys is so sweet & powerful. Faith is something that most struggle with at some point in their life, my family has been blessed with so many miracles that it is almost impossible to not believe. However, to put that unfaltering trust to test everyday can prove to be a little difficult at times.AmandaCarolhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02379251713358943453noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6105448487210970282.post-28694612074527419012012-06-14T11:36:00.001-04:002012-06-21T09:27:53.035-04:00A Month has Flown bySo looking back since my last post, many things have happened! I now have a new job, which I love, and how many people land such a great job, in their field, this young....really? I have delved into the world of Regency clothes even further than before. A short stay and bib-front gown for me. Even items for DH- breeches & and hunting frock, which I am sort of proud of!

We have also celebrated a milestone. June 11 marked our 1 year anniversary!! I can hardly believe it was a year already!
We spent the last weekend of April in the lovely little town of Plymouth, NC, enjoying the breezy weather and some good cannon fire! I wore my ever-faithful green cotton dress, with bonnet. But I was sporting a new accessory! I finally got my brooch made!!! You can see it in the picture, a gold filled frame contains a lovely curl from my dear husbands hair! It was a good conversation peice, and I look foward to wearing it in the futer to many events!

My sewing plans have not been going as planned. I have had a few upsets that have caused set-back in the sewing progress. I have started my Regency short stays, well, sort-of. The first mockup was way too big! So down 2 sizes I went, but have not assembled that mock-up yet. However I did get some lovely light-green fustion for $2/yard!!! Yes, I did buy the whole bolt. I am thinking about making a dress and matching pelessie, or just a dress with some very nice trim!

Also on the Regency list is my purple "work" dress & linen apron. Both of which will not get done until stays are completed as well as DH's hunting frock.

All of this goes along with the new job!!! Yes, NEW JOB!!! I am happy to say that I am the Programs Corrdinator at Bentonville Battlefield! I am so happy to recieve the job!

Our yard is full of colorful blooms, and I am so happy about it! Azalea's in shades of pink and white, petunias in purple, white & bold pink, a sweet little "snoowball" bush, purple Iris, clumps of Lamb's ear, and a newly discovered fig tree! I love sitting out under the trees in the evening, watching the colors in the sun! The yard is full of Dogwood trees that bloomed a few weeks ago leaving their white petals behind for vibrant green leaves wich seem to give the best shade.
Lots of food and friends to enjoy the day with. It was a beautiful day in the 70's, sunny and a little breeze. The girls enojyed at tea party in the yard before the egg hunt. (I'm the best aunt who gives them real tea cups and silver tea kettles to play with).
The silk is yello & white plaid taffeta. This apron is fairly small with 2 pockets in white, fringed in yellow and gauged to a cord waistband. I can't wait to have an event nice enought to wear it to and show it off.
Two taffeta cravats. The grey silk has been in the closet for over a year waiting to be turned into a cravat, the plaid I picked up at the same time I bought by apron silk (this plaid was a steal!). I wish they had enough for a dress length, but the remnant table was not so giving. I plan on making myself a little bow from the same plaid silk!

This years theme was alla bout field medicine, which included night tours of the Harper House set up in the manner it would have been the night after the battle, full of surgeons, a scared Mr. & Mrs. Harper, and wounded soldiers.

I did not get any pictures of the weekend, despite having my camera. Here I am (middle) with fellow lovers of the hobby.

My dress did turn out well, though by the end of the night it was a soggy, stretched mess. There was just enough moisture in the air to make it start to stretch out, which resulted in a modern-me on Sunday, but I was working anyway :).

Hopefully, I can get some detail shots up soon!

AmandaCarolhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02379251713358943453noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6105448487210970282.post-56778648744265742652012-03-05T16:06:00.002-05:002012-03-05T16:09:23.993-05:00Whats a girl to do?!?How can you have a quality impression without quality footwear?!?!?

Luckily, American Duchess has put out a new leather shoe for 1770's!!

The Kensigton!

For a limited time they are $99!!! For those of you who are unaware of this site, it is an amazing place to keep all of your great ideas in one place! And I spend a while browsing other ideas, so now I have ideas on top of ideas.
In the meantime I finished the new slat bonnet, pictures soon!
I am working on a few shirts for some friends. And still my new work dress has no progress. The lining is on the dress form, and the skirt is faced, but that is all so far. I think I need to tweek the fit just a little bit more before cutting the bodice fabric.

Today it is rainy, and cold, not that we've had much of a winter, but today feels like it.AmandaCarolhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02379251713358943453noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6105448487210970282.post-63672079072718351162012-02-02T13:18:00.002-05:002012-02-02T13:23:56.386-05:00Taking A MomentSo lately, I have been overrun with ideas! All flowing out of my brain (and my husband's), and Pintrest is not helping either!! We did take a break from all of the Chaos and went to Ft Fisher for their 147th Program! It was great fun! Very windy on Saturday, and turning cold on Sunday, it was still nice to have some time with our friends and share our love of history!
We have a semi- busy schedule ahead. Only 1 event in Feb, but my sewing list is fairly long, 2 commissioned shirts, finish one shirt for DH, and I would love to have my new dress finished, but it is on the back burner for now)
March will be a bit more busy, with a DHs birthday!!! Bentonvills anniversary event and a possible trip to Charleston!
Ahhh, my poor little fingers!! Sewing, cleaing, baking, but most of all at the end of the day I smile at the accomplishments!!
Happy Sewing!!AmandaCarolhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02379251713358943453noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6105448487210970282.post-59937733362060406642012-01-07T13:13:00.004-05:002012-01-07T13:17:47.709-05:00Bonnet!Im sewing a bonnet! Not a pretty-pretty decked in flowers and feather bonnet, with silk ties to my knees. NO! Instead a simple orange/white homespun slat bonnet. Going back over my wardrobe and getting ready for an event in October (yes, October!) I noticed that my basics need some work! I need to make some new underpinnings this year, like I said last year, the only that got done was one new pair of drawers. So at almost midnight I cut out this pretty plaid fabric using a pattern I had from a friend that was drafted off a North Carolina original, by one of her friends. Any way, I lengthened the curtain just a few inches. I did want this one to be a true working class bonnet. It's the little accessories that make your impression a one of kind well rounded one!AmandaCarolhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02379251713358943453noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6105448487210970282.post-7534444894323783162012-01-06T12:56:00.014-05:002012-01-06T13:18:20.967-05:00Looking Back at 2011Looking back at 2011 brings lots of happy memories. Two of my favorite people join me as we watch local Johnston County men volunteer for service shorly after Secession.
Getting Married brings lots of events before the actual wedding. I had 3 Bridal showers before we said "I Do" in June. My beautiful neices here with me were my flower girls and ring attendant, and I would not have had it any other way!!

FINALLY!!! My very most favorite moment of 2010!!! We said yes to each other for the rest of our lives on June 11, and despite the miserable heat and the almost lack of air conditioner in the church, it was the best day ever!!!

We ventured to Virginia for our honeymoon! We took a detour through Richmond to stop by the Museum of the Confederacy, which I had never been to. Here we are in front of "The Last Metting", and I never thought it would be that big!!

Williamsburg!! We loved our week long stay in the historic town! We stayed in one of the Colonial Houses (Moody Kithchen). The week could not have been better, the weather was perfect, not too hot, but warm enough to enjoy the whole week, and only one day of slight rain! Here we are on the carrige ride!

My great friend, got us into another time period. Playing Whist at the Raleigh City Musuem, dancing and general nonsense was the agenda for the day. But this one evnt has now lead to us diving into the Regency!

Again in Raleigh! The day began with us talking about men going to war and Raleigh's role during the Civil War. After we had educated the public and delighted ourselves with some parlor games, we ventrued across the Capitol Green to the State History Museum, and as you can tell had a little bit of fun with the new exhibit!

September! The slightly cooler brought fall reenactments to fill our weekends. At Averasboro our Ladies Society fed the men for the weekend, and believe me they did not go hungry! We cooked bountiful breakfast both mornings and stew for lucnchs. They also feasted on 9 loaves of bread with fresh butter and an entire batch of Applesauce cookies, in addition to the hot meals.

Wedding bells again!! This time for my cousin, who had been a bridesmaid at my wedding. I was so happy to stand beside her as her matron of honor on her wedding day!! So I was browsing, and found this! The fabric is a purple plaid cotton, and I know I'm goning to have to change it a little. Still deciding if I really really like it. It has much less color than it did before, but soemhow I like the simplicity of it.AmandaCarolhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02379251713358943453noreply@blogger.com0
